Hello there! I started a few blogs in the past but have never really had the time to keep up with them. Now that I have moved to the country I have more time for the things I love! I have started gardening and find that I really rather enjoy it! I get up in the mornings and put the water on for some tea. While that is heating, I head out to the garden for watering time. After watering and looking for signs of any pests I head in and make my tea.
Sitting on my porch with a cup of tea, the book I am currently reading and the sound of the chirping baby birds that recently hatched is one of my daily pleasures. The summer is pretty hot here in the Kern River Valley, so my alone time is usually pretty short. By 8am it is almost to hot to sit outside. There is just something about the peace and quiet of the country. Before heading in to start on breakfast, I toss out a few handfuls of bird seed for the covey of quails and then food for the grey squirrels (figure if I feed them in the same spot and time they will stay out of my garden!) My strawberry plants are starting to give me quite a few berries, although they are only about the size of a large almond. I have had many cherry tomatoes and a few champions but my early girls are lagging behind. I also have some red bell peppers, yellow pepper like looking thing (it was on sale at the nursery because the tag came off saying what it was), carrots and pole beans.
I have a red clay/dirt ground here so made a raised bed with a mix of peat moss, top soil, chicken manure and compost. I have some plants in the raised bed and some in those orange Homer buckets from Home Depot. The plants in the containers are actually doing a lot better than the raised bed. I have started collecting the frosting buckets from my local bakeries (they just give them to me FREE) so I can restart in the Spring with all containers instead of the raised bed. I will post more on that once I get all my other things for it. Well, thanks for stopping by! Till I write again!
